CTRL-OS 26.05: NixOS Innovation with 5-Year Stability
Managing the rapid release cycle of NixOS shouldn't distract your team from building core product features. CTRL-OS 26.05 offers a more sustainable approach by extending support to five years, providing the long-term stability that industrial applications require.

NixOS moves fast. For developers, that speed is a superpower; for a product’s bottom line, it can become a burden. Keeping up with breaking updates and the 6-month release cycle often imposes a “maintenance tax” that diverts weeks away from core product innovation just to keep up.
We designed CTRL-OS to eliminate this friction. By extending the standard 7-month NixOS support window to 5 full years, we provide a durable foundation for teams who need to ship once and scale for years.
The CTRL-OS 26.05 Roadmap
CTRL-OS 26.05 will launch alongside the community NixOS 26.05 release. It is a drop-in replacement, meaning your team can target the newest NixOS features immediately without the anxiety of a forced migration in half a year.
With a CTRL-OS subscription, you gain full visibility into your security posture. We take responsibility for your specific package set and provide a customer-specific Security Tracker so you can see the vulnerability status of your stack in real-time.
Our support lifecycle is divided into two strategic phases: Co-Maintenance and Stability.
Phase 1: Co-Maintenance (2026)
While NixOS 26.05 is actively maintained by the community, we act as your dedicated partner. We don’t just “pass through” updates; we make them predictable and reliable.
- Upstream First: We use our internal monitoring tools to identify missing backports and unpatched CVEs. We contribute these fixes directly back to the NixOS upstream.
- Backporting Discipline: We solve the “silent backport” problem by ensuring security fixes are rigorously applied to the 26.05 branch in coordination with upstream maintainers.
- Transparent Delta: If a fix is too urgent to wait for upstream merging, we ship it in CTRL-OS immediately. Because our source is open, our delta to upstream is always transparent and auditable.
Phase 2: Stability (2027-2031)
Once community support ends, the “upgrade tax” usually kicks in. CTRL-OS prevents this. We assume full ownership of the 26.05 branch, moving development to our infrastructure.
- Zero-Disruption Transition: For your users and your CI/CD pipelines, nothing changes. The transition from community to CTRL-OS maintenance is seamless.
- Real Stability: No new features are introduced that break your builds; we focus exclusively on essential security and functional fixes for the remaining 4.5 years.
- Guaranteed Continuity: We provide the support that the community cannot, de-risking your product’s lifecycle for half a decade.
Beyond CTRL-OS 26.05
Our commitment to industrial-grade stability is long-term. We plan to release a new LTS version every two years, with CTRL-OS 28.05 already on our roadmap.
